Aliens not to be allowed to join Lithuanian political parties

Regardless of the warning of the European Commission, the Seimas did not permit the nationals of countries other than Lithuania to become members of the country’s political parties. The suggestion that nationals of the European Union (EU) Member States permanently residing in Lithuania might become members of Lithuanian parties was submitted by the Ministry of Justice. The Seimas did not support the proposal with 36 members of Parliament voting for, 19 against and 20 abstaining. The draft was returned for improvement. The draft had been prepared in response to the notification of the European Commission (EC) concerning a possible violation permitting only citizens of the country to establish parties and join them. Brussels asked Lithuania whether such a regulation did not contravene the provisions entrenched in the law of the Community, which allow EU nationals to stand as candidates in elections to the European Parliament (EP) and municipal councils.
